How to transition to a big kid bed.

It usually becomes pretty clear when your child is ready to transition out of a crib. For example, if she can climb out, it's probably a good time! In most cases though, I recommend waiting until your child is at least 3 before making this transition.

When you are ready to make the switch, here are some things to consider:

1. Use a clock. To help your child know when she can get out of bed be sure that she has a clock in her bedroom.

2. Get a big kid bed. Children often do much better with this transition if they move into a twin or full-size bed, not a toddler bed. It makes sense to put your child in a bed that is actually bigger, not just a crib mattress in a different bed frame.

3. Be prepared for the post-honeymoon phase. Most toddlers do well with the transition until the novelty wears off, at which point they may start pushing boundaries. When this happens, it's so important to be consistent. If your child gets out of bed, take her back immediately. Don’t waver on this or she will be getting out of bed every 5 minutes to ask you for something else!

My final words: GOOD LUCK.
